Child Counselling

Children and young people may need additional support for a variety of reasons at different times in their from school or exam based anxiety, bullying, exploring their sexuality, to a change in family dynamics and moving house.
Support is also available for those with suspected neurodiversity or a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder to help them navigate the neurotypical world.
Individual parental consultations are available whether or not your child is being seen for therapy to support you with life at home.
In person therapy is recommended for 3-14 year olds however video or telephone appointments are available for those 14+ where appropriate.
Play Therapy is a particularly beneficial way of working for primary aged clients who may struggle to verbally articulate their feelings and inner world. In play therapy figurines and the sand tray may be used in some sessions and in others therapeutic storytelling may be a gentler way to connect with your child's concerns.
Art Therapy and talking therapy are available with older clients to support them with any mental health challenges and foster a sense of empowerment and growing confidence. Art therapy encompasses working with drawing, painting, clay, collage and music depending on what best suits your child.
The teenage years into early adulthood are a time of constant transition where feelings of loss, fear, being stuck, confusion and general worry about the future are all common. Counselling can help one navigate this time and feel more confident in decisions made.
I often work in conjunction not only with parents and carers but children's nurseries and schools. This gives me a deeper insight into how they are presenting and potentially struggling there. I have worked in recent years in both schools and nurseries so have a good understanding of what sort of supports can be implemented to best meet the needs of your child. As well as working in my room in Randolph Place it is possible for sessions to be arranged at your child's school or nursery if they have an appropriate room, please let me know in your initial enquiry if this is something you are interested in.
If you have concerns around attachment with your child or feel like you would benefit from join sessions, Parent Child Dyadic work is available to strengthen your relationship and help you support your child with their worries. In such sessions I follow the principles of Dyadic Development Psychotherapy where sessions are had both with a parent or carer individually utilising psychoeducation and offering support, and separate sessions where both the parent or carer and child are present. This support is beneficial for their current relationships whilst equipping them with the tools to strengthen future ones and helping to address any concerns around developmental delay.
If you are unsure an assessment session can help decide whether your child may best benefit from individual or joint sessions.
Sessions are weekly at a mutually agreed time for 45 minutes. The first session will be an assessment one so we can both gauge whether this is the right style of therapy for your child.
